BRIAN BENJAMIN FOR NYC COMPTROLLER Communications Workers of America Local 1180 today announced they are endorsing State Senator Brian Benjamin for New York City Comptroller. “We are proud to support Brian in his race to become the City’s next chief fiscal officer,” said Gloria Middleton, President of CWA Local 1180, which represents 9,000 active public and private sector workers and 6,200 retirees. “Of all the candidates we interviewed, Brian is the only one who has the experience necessary to manage the City’s investments and protect the pensions of our retirees. We know he will use his experience and knowledge to responsibly manage the city’s financial situation and bring us out of the bleak situation we are now in due to the pandemic.” Update on 3% Wage Increase We have verified with the City that the 3% wage increase effective Oct. 6, 2020, will be paid to Mayoral agencies and the DOE on Oct. 30. New York City Housing will be paid Nov. 6. H+H has not committed to a date, but they are saying early Jan. 2021. The pandemic has had a devastating impact on New York City’s budget as well. Of course, officials are targeting city workers to help erase the growing deficit. Last year, we successfully saved the jobs of 22,000 city workers … but more still needs to be done so we do not face this problem again. There is a bill in Albany that you probably are familiar with – the Early Retirement Incentive – that would allow certain members of the city’s three pension systems to retire early without a financial penalty. Local 1180 has been doing all we can to make sure our Senators and Assemblymembers know we are counting on them to vote YES to this bill. But we need YOUR help, too. You recently received an email from Local 1180 about the ERI, asking you to sign a letter to your State Representatives. That email provided you with your Senate and Assembly districts and a link to our website where we have already written that letter on your behalf. All you need to do is type in your name and hit send. If you have not already done so, please take a few minutes to sign it now. Albany needs to know that 365,000 workers who kept New York City operational throughout the pandemic are expecting them to support the ERI. The combined effort of ALL Local 1180 members will ensure that Albany gets the message. We know the last year has been difficult for everyone. With the new COVID vaccination, however, we are hopeful for a return to some sort of normal. We have received many questions from members about the vaccine – when am I able to get it – where can I get vaccinated – why isn’t there enough for everyone. We know there is a tremendous shortage of vaccines, and that communities of color have less access to the vaccines. This has been voiced through our legislatures and with the 3 rd vaccine being approved, hopefully these communities will be able to receive the vaccines more equitably. It should be noted that many locations have unused vaccines toward the end of the day. If you have the time and patience, consider waiting in line at a vaccination site near you toward its closing time. There are no guarantees, but it might be worth a shot. Hopefully with enough New Yorkers vaccinated and I had mine, we will get back to some sort of normalcy. Please, as always, stay safe!! Members in Titles & Agencies Covered by the PAA et al Contract If you are in a title and agency covered by the recently ratified PAA et al contract and would like to calculate your new gross salary, you can utilize the chart below. Simply enter either your current biweekly or annual salary in the red box and then click on the "calculate" button. The blue boxes will populate themselves, showing you what your salary will be effective May 6, 2018, with the 2% increase; effective May 6, 2019 with the 2.25% increase compounded; and what your new salary will be effective Oct. 6, 2020, compounded with the 3% increase. As President Middleton announced at the February General Membership meeting, those members in the PAA et al contract who work in Mayoral agencies will receive their wage increases and retroactive pay on March 20, 2020, while those working for NYCHA will receive their wage increases and retroactive pay on March 27, 2020. Local 1180 is currently following up with H+H on a payout date, which we will report here as soon as we are notified of the date. Local 1180 is in contact with NYC Transit to set up bargaining dates for that contract. CONTRACT NEWS UNION SETTLES PAA ET AL CONTRACT! In the early 1960s, when public sector organizing exploded and other City workers were making significant gains through collective bargaining, MMS members decided that they too needed to be able to negotiate collectively in order to advance their interests. They signed up the necessary majority of workers, and in 1965 they voted to join the Communications Workers of America. Just two years later, in 1967, with CWA's assistance in overcoming a few obstacles, Local 1180 became CWA’s first public sector local. Today, Local 1180 remains one of the largest public sector locals of CWA, representing more than 9,000 active members and 6,200 retirees. Union membership is overwhelmingly comprised of women, women of color, and other minorities. Most work in one of the dozens of New York City Mayoral agencies, while others work at H+H, Board of Education, Housing Authority, Transit Authority, School Construction Authority, and the state's Unified Court System. As administrative and supervisory workers, our members process payrolls, manage computer systems, monitor contracts, pay vendors, supervise front line staff, and in general, coordinate a whole host of other City functions that go unnoticed.
